LOVE IN THE TIMES OF SOCIAL DISTANCING

The inescapable pandemic that has turned the world upside down is a topic that millennials (along with everyone else on the planet) can’t seem to shut up about. Yes, we hear all day everyday about the pandemic and how many more are infected or how the death toll is rising. The CDC has advised everyone to practice social distancing by staying at home, something that millennials have surprisingly been having a hard time with.

Social distancing is very self-explanatory: stay six feet away from any person at all times. It shouldn’t be that difficult for the younger crowds who have mastered the art of social media: socializing on the web while being physically alone. However, social distancing has become a task for those younger millennials who have partners that live in a separate home.

Yes, even in trying times, love is always the best reason to disobey orders, but this feels like it’s more than that. Cue in the “forever alone” characteristic that the usual millennial grew up with which is already a sort of social distancing mechanism; however, if we are being honest, this is completely voluntary. Social apps have made it so that younger people are more than just a phone call away.

This should make the whole six feet apart from your partner thing a whole lot easier, right? Nope. The fact that we are more available also gives way for your partner to want you to be more available to them too…as well as everybody else.

Do you run the risk of your partner sneaking a DM to somebody else? Definitely, but that possibility was already there before the pandemic.

The reality of the situation is that if your partner is going to take advantage of the pandemic to hop into someone else’s DMs, chances are your partner was going to do that sooner or later anyway. It’s best to practice social distancing for the sake of everyone on this planet, and maybe even more so towards your partner that’s giving off sketchy vibes, if you catch my drift.
